AKA Blockchains Internship

Project Overview

In my 3rd year of my degree, I had to complete a 6 month internship in a chosen company of my choice that operated in a field relevant to my interests and degree. I chose a small startup company that aimed to teach people about future technologies such as the Blockchain, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence. These were topics I was already interested in prior to my co-op.

Through connections I had with the owner of the company, I knew they were looking for a media intern to design branding, edit videos and generally help out with their social media accounts so it felt like the perfect opportunity for me to take on the role as someone who hadn't much professional experience but was hungry to gain it.

As a part of my internship, I got a multitude of opportunities to use and improve on my graphic design skills. I got to use Adobe Photoshop to design a branding banner for a podcast that was ran by the company. I gained a greater knowledge on using blending options on objects and text to create a lit up, neon effect which I felt looked quite appealing as well as different luminosity filters to darken the wall background to draw attention away from it and towards the neon sign. I then animated it using After Effects to flicker like a real neon sign.

I also did quite a bit of video editing using Sony Vegas Pro for the company in the form of editing videos for their different social media platforms such as TikTok and Youtube. I would take raw footage and cut it down to shorter and more easily consumable videos with subtitles and crop the video depending on the social media platform I was working with. I found that doing this would substantially help in retaining viewer attention especially on a platform like TikTok where the goal is to have short, snappy videos that grab the users attention immediately and doesn't need to hold it for long to get the point across.

A first for me while working at my internship was learning to use Adobe After Effects to create a variety of designs for the company. I found the capabilities of After Effects to be very impressive and had a strong drive to learn as much as I could about what I could do with the software during my internship. I started by creating a short, couple second outro that I would attach to the videos I was creating which had the other social media handles of the company that was styled similarly to TikTok's red, white and cyan glitch text effect. I also made a video format for the podcast episodes that had a working audio waveform visualiser as well as a timer and progress bar for the time left in the podcast. Finally I made trading cards for some of the members of the company that had a 3d perspective effect and rotated from left to right with a sheen effect every couple of seconds.
