Creating Product Marketing Designs in the style of Apple over the past 70 years

Project Overview
For my final year in my degree, I had to come up with a project that interested me which I could work on for the full academic year. I am passionate about graphic design and quite interested and familiar with the tech company Apple and their line of products. Given this, I decided to base my project on researching the marketing of Apple products since the beginning of the company in 1976.

I created my own image compositions in Adobe Photoshop in the style of Apple's advertising posters as well as advertising posters from the 1950's/1960's. My posters would be stylized differently depending on the decade.

Final Year Project
Graphic Design
September 2022 - April 2023
This project began as a way of studying the design style the multi national tech company Apple uses in their marketing campaigns for the various products they advertised throughout the decades since the beginning of the company in 1976. My research would involve exploring in depth the concept of minimalism in design and how Apple implemented such a design style in their product marketing since the beginning and how it evolved
to the point we can see in their marketing today.

I would find various examples of artwork from each decade and take inspiration from their style and imagery then use it to create my own product advertising posters using the image editing software of my choice which in this case is Adobe Photoshop 2023. I chose this software due to it being the industry standard for image editing and also because I have a familiarity with it from using it for both personal and professional projects for a number of years.

As previously mentioned, the image editing software of choice for this project is Photoshop 2023. After my finishing my research, I began to create my image compositions styled from each decade from the 1950’s/1960’s to the 2020’s. There were a number of advertisement posters that I had discovered during my research which I used as a starting point in my designs for each decade. For example, I used the “Black tie optional” iBook advertisement from 2000 as a baseline to create my Apple Watch ad from the 2000’s decade. It is easy to see the correlations between each poster from the font, to the placement of the product as well as the “Think Different” slogan which was apart of the ongoing marketing campaign at the time.

I also used a number of tools and techniques that I had learned from previous projects to create some of my designs. One tool I found immensely helpful was the Object Selection Tool which uses Adobe’s AI technology to identify specific subjects in an image and create a selection around said subject that can be cut out and used elsewhere. One example where I used this tool was when I was creating my 1950’s/ 1960’s iPhone ad. I took a stock image of a 1950’s style pinup girl and used the object selection tool to cut her out of the original stock image so I could paste her into my image composition. Then, adding a number of filters and fonts, I was able to emulate the style of the advertisement poster from those decades all because of Photoshop’s useful tools and techniques.
