Mini FYP

Project Overview
In the 3rd year of my degree in college, I had to come up with a project idea that would serve as a practice for the real final year project I would have to do the following year in my final year, hence the name mini FYP. I decided to make 2 image compositions that showed how by using Adobe Photoshop to combine images found on Adobe Stock Images could create a sense of realism.

The idea was to take an object in one image and insert it into a background image and use the assortment of tools and techniques in Photoshop to make the object blend seamlessly into the background image to make it look as real as possible.
Deciding on what I wanted to choose as a topic for my mini FYP was one of the most difficult parts of the whole project for me. I knew that my passion lied in graphic design through image editing and I knew that it was important to be able to use this project as a baseline or practice for my real Final Year Project in the final year. Because of this, I decided to choose a project in which I could learn more and improve on my image editing skills using Adobe Photoshop in preparation for when I would plan on using it again for my real FYP.

I found the sense of realism from image merging fascinating as when done at a highly skilled level, the merging can be seamless like there was no editing done in the first place. This technique was something I always wanted to learn so I wanted to focus on it for my 2 image compositions I would create for this project. The first was a mockup advertisement poster for the 2022 Volkswagen Passat car. I took a stock photo of the car from Adobe Stock Images and began by making a selection around the car then cutting it out and pasting it onto a background I found. The size and positioning of the car was important in trying to make it look like it fit into the gravel of the background image. To improve on this, I added a number of lighting effects, shading and shadows using a variety of tools in Photoshop.

As for my second image composition, I decided to take a stock image of a woman running on a bridge and cut her out using precise selection and paste her into a background of a morning boardwalk. Similar to the VW car ad, I used a number of tools and techniques including sizing, positioning, lighting, shading and shadows to make her fit into the boardwalk scene as realistically as I possibly could given my skill level at the time.
